The 5th grade TAG (Talented and Gifted) reading class has begun its "Study of Eminence" Unit. To expand on this work, Mr Jack Van Ens will be playing Thomas Jefferson for the entire 5th grade at Cottonwood Plains Elementary School. In addition, Mr. Van Ens will conduct a workshop with the TAG students about giving first person presentations.

Pueblo's second annual Voices of the Valley Chautauqua will be held Friday and Saturday, July 29-30. For three consecutive nights beginning on Monday, July 25, movies corresponding to Voices of the Valley presentations will be shown at the Rawlings Library in Pueblo. Voices of the Valley will bring history alive and introduce you to famous authors of the past who have left lasting impressions on the world's ideologies. August 6th is the last day of the Smithsonian Exhibit "Between Fences" at the Limon Heritage Museum. Limon residents will be celebrating the 20th annual Heritage Celebration which is an all day festival to honor the heritage of the Colorado plains and the final opportunity to se the "Between Fences" exhibit at the Museum.
On May 5, 20111, area FFA groups in Limon will gather at the Limon Heritage Museum to build a variety of 16' long fences depicting many of the fences highlighted in the exhibit in actual size. A noon meal will be provided for all participants.

Twenty-first century Americans can identify with Franklin's pragmatism, his work ethic and his ideas about civic duty and self-reliance.
"Rosie the Riveter," the name given to women war workers during World War II, lived and worked throughout the United States welding, making bullets, and doing a wide variety of factory jobs for the war effort.
Dr. Susan Anderson, or "Doc Susie," is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable figures from Grand County's past. She arrived in Fraser in 1907, at the age of 37, thinking she would die within the year of the tuberculosis she had contracted while nursing patients in Greeley, Colorado. Beloved Doc Susie remained in Fraser, practicing medicine, for nearly 50 years.

The August 3-7, 2010 HPC, theme is “American Voices: Breaking the Mold.”
Lynne Swanson, an accomplished Chautauquan, as Isabella L. Bird, presented by Colorado Humanities on Wednesday, April 14th, 5:30 pm. In 1872, a stout, high-minded English spinster boarded a steamship in London to sail around the world. Isabella Bird attracted adventures. She recorded her lively experiences in letters to her stay-at-home sister, Henrietta. When Isabella returned to Britain, the two sisters compiled these letters in a widely read book, A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains.

Chautauqua scholar Mary Jane Bradbury will present the character portrayal of Augusta Tabor to members, family, friends and guests of the Colorado Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Chautauqua format of speaking includes 40 minutes of monologue, 10 minutes of q and a in character and 10 minutes of q and a out of character. The program will take place at the Glenmoor Country Club, 110 Glenmoor Drive, Cherry Hills Village.

An Affair of the Heart, a dramatic presentation, will reveal the close relationships that Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd president of the United States, had with several women. This historically accurate program, using letters and personal documents, will examine the complex and intertwined relationship between Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor, his wife; Lucy Mercer Rutherford, initially a social secretary to Eleanor; and Margaret Daisy Suckley, a close companion and correspondent . Richard Marold, an historian and journalist, will portray Roosevelt.
Twin Peaks Charter Academy, Longmont, CO, a core knowledge school, has accessed the Chautauqua Speakers Bureau and Authors in Community Programs to provide historical character speakers for its Spirit Week. TPCA will host Thomas Jefferson, portrayed by Jack Van Ens, to educate the elementary school students on the process of writing a Declaration of Independence. The middle school students will have the opportunity to hear FDR, portrayed by Richard Marold. Approximately 700 students will meet these historical characters and see their core knowledge education come to life.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president four times, more than any man in U.S. history. Although born and raised in a privileged New York family, FDR became the spokesman for the average American. After 1921 he was unable to walk on his own because of polio, but he later brought the country back to its feet. During his administration, Social Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission and other programs were established to deal with the economic depression.
Soon after he arrived from Kansas as "an invalid boy" at age 14 in 1884, Enos Mills bonded with Colorado's wildlife, mountains, and wilderness. Growing strong and self-reliant, he roamed the American West summer and winter, experiencing numerous spine-chilling adventures, but always returned to his cabin at the foot of Longs Peak near Estes Park. Famed explorer and nature writer John Muir inspired young Mills in his pursuits as naturalist, writer, speaker, and conservationist.

Winfield Scott Stratton, an itinerant carpenter and prospector in the Rockies during the 1870s and 80s, became the envy of the mining world in the 1890s when he emerged from the Cripple Creek gold fields as a multi-millionaire. A paradoxical character who struggled under the burden of his wealth, Stratton contributed enormously to the building and beauty of Colorado.

While in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, enduring terrible hardships, Isabella began to feel revitalized and to enjoy herself. She was having an adventure!

For five days each August on Aims Community College campus, audiences step back in time as High Plains Chautauqua (HPC) recreates the turn-of-the-century traveling tent Chautauqua that brought education and entertainment to communities in the form of lectures, concerts, and plays.
In its fourth year, Two Rivers Chautauqua in Grand Junction at the Cross Orchards Historic Site will present Chautauqua portrayals of Coco Chanel, Babe Ruth, P. T. Barnum and Irene Castle. The two-day program September 18-19, 2009 will include presentations in schools by visiting scholars as well as at the tent site to the general public during Apple Jubilee, a history re-enactment festival sponsored by the Museum of Western Colorado. Daytime programs include presentations by Young Chautauquans under the big tent, lectures, children's activities and living history demonstrations.
