Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book presents three discussions of To Kill A Mockingbird, as part of One Book, One Denver's line-up of events for October.  Bring your insights and observations to these free discussions led by Dr. Arthur Jones, founder and co-chair of The Spirituals Project and senior clinical professor of psychology at the University of Denver.

Thursday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Schlessman Family Branch Library
Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Park Hill Branch Library

Thursday, Oct. 15 at 12 p.m., Gates Conference Room on Level 5 of the Denver Central Library.

Jones will lead lively discussions regarding the book’s central themes of race, class, and gender. The audience is encouraged to raise additional topics of interest relating to the book, such as the possible parallels between the caste system of the early 20th century South and 21st century life in Denver. For book-lovers and those particularly interested in controversial literary themes, the discussions are not to be missed.

Colorado Humanities, co-sponsor of the One Book, One Denver Program with the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and others, is pleased to welcome Jones as guest host for the events. An innovative thinker and community leader as well as author, producer, singer, and teacher, Jones founded The Spirituals Project, a University of Denver-based, nonprofit organization concerned with the cultural preservation and revitalization of the spirituals tradition, in 1998. Author of several publications, including “Wade in the Water: The Wisdom of the Spirituals” (1993, 1999), and co-author of “The Triumph of the Soul: Cultural and Psychological Aspects of African American Music” (2001), Jones also co-produced a 2007 CD titled “They Slice The Air,” which is a collection of spirituals in the African American choral tradition sung by The Spirituals Project Choir, a 75-voice chorus, as well as by TSP’s smaller singing ensembles Sankofa, and Sojourners.

Admission is free and open to the public.
