Motheread/Fatheread® Colorado

Who
Children and their parents and caregivers benefit from Motheread/Fatheread. Adult educators and child care providers are trained to help parents read to their children.

What
A parenting and humanities curriculum and training that helps parents/adult caregivers and children read together and talk about the issues in the stories and in their lives. Adult literacy educators are trained to deliver the program to parents or children at their local libraries, family resource centers, and public schools.

Why
Motheread/Fatheread increases student success in school through enriched preparation for school entry; helps close the reading ability gap by third grade; and introduces humanities through topics and themes. Parents who participate in program increase their own reading level as they help their children experience the pleasure of reading. This fun curriculum supports parents in making their homes a literate environment.

Where
Available to educators and child care providers statewide. Presently implemented by ten partner agencies at 17 sites in Alamosa, Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Durango, and Lafayette. This national award-winning program is based in North Carolina and was established in 1987.

When
A three-day Motheread/Fatheread Institute to train adult educators is planned for June 2009.
A one-day Story Exploring training for child care providers is planned for June 2009. 

How Much
Colorado Humanities supports training of adult literacy educators and child care providers and provides money for books, which comprise a lending library for parents. Motheread/Fatheread training is free to participants in literacy programs.
